Update from Turner Contemporary

A reminder that our first Generate family workshop of the summer will take place this Saturday 17 July.  Come and join us at Droit House by the Harbour Arm in Margate.  Celebrating Children’s Art Day Droit House will be packed full of wonderful materials to make banners, bunting and balloons.

Attached is a flyer listing all the workshops this summer and autumn.  Please pass this on to anyone who would be interested in coming along.

Building progress : Still on track

The construction of the gallery continues to proceed smoothly and we expect that next month the glass façade will be completed and the scaffolding and tower cranes removed. It will be fantastic to see the exterior of the building looking so complete. Other key developments include: · The main staircase installed and the final part of the roof decking has been closed up (see our spectacular images of this process). · Most windows and glazing have now been installed, including the two-storey high north facing windows to the ground floor and balcony galleries and the full height windows to the Learning studio. · Internal finishes and partitions are progressing well in all areas and areas such as the internal offices and the café and kitchen are now clearly visible. For a more detailed update on the build progress visit our website First public tours of the gallery site to take place Turner Contemporary is offering Thanet residents the opportunity to be the first public to see inside the gallery. 100 Thanetonians will enjoy exclusive tours of the building having won their places on a radio phone in competition run by the KMFM breakfast show. The competition is running during the week of 5 July 2010 with the tours to take place on Saturday 24 July as part of the London 2012 Open Weekend. For more information see our website. Turner Contemporary wins prestigious award Turner Contemporary’s ‘Times of Our Lives’ project has been unveiled as a national winner of the Transformation Fund category at the Adult Learning Week awards. The announcement was made at the Adult Learning Week award ceremony at Millbank Tower in London in May. The awards recognise creative and innovative individuals, groups, families and projects across the country which have had a positive impact on the lives of adult learners. As part of ‘Times of our Lives’, a group of 17 people aged between 60 and 85, and 17 young people, have been meeting since autumn 2009 to develop art skills and produce a vision of what ‘teenage’ means to them. The project was funded by the Government's Transformation Fund and supported by BBC Radio Kent, the University of Kent's School of Engineering and Digital Arts, Kent County Council's Youth Arts Service. The group will start to meet again in July 2010. For more details on the Time of Our Lives project see our website Exhibitions at Droit House this summer Forward: Cultural Ambassadors 2010 1 July to 8 August, 2010, Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pmCultural Ambassadors is a 12 week creative art project providing opportunities for Thanet residents to learn more about cultural regeneration, delivered by Turner Contemporary and the University for the Creative Arts. This year’s eighteen Cultural Ambassadors will present their work inForward, an exhibition which showcases their artworks and achievements. Forward will be open to the public at Droit House from 1 July to 8 August, 2010, Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm. Generate 14 August - 26 September 2010, Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm Generate is a dynamic artist-led project which explores and promotes creative exchange between generations. Working closely with Turner Contemporary, Generate are investigating how their artistic practice as adults can be influenced through the creativity of their children, with the results on display in this exhibition. Exhibition Opening - Turner Contemporary - Forward - Weds, 30th June 2010

A collaborative exhibition by 17 local residents on a 12 week exploration in art and design, developing practical skills and learning about the role of cultural organisations in the community. Cultural Ambassadors is a partnership project led by University for the Creative Arts and Turner Contemporary.

Turner Contemporary and University for the Creative Arts are delighted to present Forward, an exhibition made by seventeen adults who live in Thanet and are involved in the Cultural Ambassadors programme. Cultural Ambassadors first started six years ago and is designed to offer local people an opportunity to get involved in the cultural regeneration of their area.

During this twelve week accredited course this year’s Cultural Ambassadors have gained practical skills through artist led workshops, visited galleries in London and explored new ways of looking at, discussing and making art. These new experiences have informed their creativity and forged strong bonds among the group, which we hope will continue long after this exhibition has ended. Forward shows the talent and variety in the individuals’ work, and aims to illustrate the journey the Ambassadors have taken to get here.

During the six years that Cultural Ambassadors has been running we have had many participants go on to enter the Access course and continue onto the part time Fine Art BA degree at UCA, three of which have been instrumental in supporting this years ambassadors.

Another Cultural Ambassador has gone on to work for Turner Contemporary and is now an employee of GroundworkWalkie Talkie scheme. Also a participant from last years’ course has had her artwork included at Tate Modern as part of their tenth birthday event called “No Soul for Sale”
